The opening event activities- Guarding the Butterfly Valley Wild Game

Activity Introduction

From October to March, Euploea butterflies appear in clusters in the valleys of Laonong River tributaries on Dawu Mountain to escape the cold winter, returning to the north in the spring, a phenomenon known as "overwintering." About 100,000-200,000 Taiwanese Purple Crow Butterflies spend the winter in the Maolin region also called Butterfly Valley, a rich ecological environment we must all work to preserve.

Do you want to become a warrior protecting Butterfly Valley? Anyone who passes the challenges below and completes the wild game can win a "Limited Edition Euploea butterfly Foldable Umbrella.”

Description of the Challenges

  • First Challenge Habitat Crisis - charades Challenge Location: Ecological Park First Parking Lot

Participant are divided into groups of two and the challenge involves one team member reading out a question on the Euploea butterflies habitat being destroyed to the other, who is required to answer 2 questions correctly within the time limit to pass the challenge. This informs the public about the habitat destruction crisis faced by the Euploea butterflies.

  • Second challenge Global warming – jump jump tempo Challenge Location: Ecological Park First Parking Lot

Participants line up in a straight line, and are asked "What causes global warming." When the challenge master asks the question those taking part have to respond immediately and choose the correct answer by jumping to both sides. Understanding the issues we face represents the starting point for working together to reduce global warming.

  • Third challenge Butterfly Warrior - block game Challenge Location: At the entrance to Butterfly Trail

Participants must pick up their shields stand up in front of the Euploea butterfly sign and work together to resist an attack from challenge master. When all the attacks are over the defenders become real butterfly protection warriors.

  • Fourth challenge Predator Threat - Water Gun Shootout Challenge Location: Butterfly Front Plaza

Participants hold water guns, and objects representing the Euploea butterflies and their natural enemies (parasitic wasps, etc) appear in front of them. The visitors are required to use the water guns to take out the Euploea butterfly’s natural enemies allowing them to escape.

  • Fifth challenge Euploea Butterflies Migration - swing car maze Challenge Location: Butterfly Front Plaza

Participants drive a swing car to imitate Euploea butterflies migrating south, and have to avoid many challenges along the way (national highways, freeways, cars… etc), in order to safely arrive in Maolin, a Euploea butterfly sanctuary. This challenge allows participants to experience first-hand the dangers faced by the Euploea butterflies as they migrate.
